The Ferryman, by Jez Butterworth, (28th April - 2nd May, 2026)
The Ferryman takes place in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, and tells the story of the Carney family, who have farmed their land for generations. Set in August 1981, it depicts The Troubles, which formed a violent and often shocking background to the lives of many in the province. Ten years previously, 20 year old Seamus Carney “disappeared” from the family home, leaving behind a wife and 3 year old son. Since then, various sightings of him have been reported, but he has never been found. Now he has - a dead body buried in a bog just across the Irish border.
The impact of this on the rest of Seamus’s large and close, if sometimes argumentative, family re-opens many wounds which have never healed. And then the IRA come to call . . .
