Brian Friel was a writer of great sensitivity, perception and insight, using beautiful poetic language to create characters and situations. Translations is considered to be his masterpiece and his most popular and enduring play. Set in Donegal in 1833, it examines changes in Irish society and culture which are already underway, taking a small rural community as a microcosm of the differing reactions of the people. Changing attitudes to the prevalence of the Irish language are a part of this, and this is exacerbated by the arrival in Baile Beag of a party of 'sappers' from the British Army, who have been tasked with surveying and mapping the local area in preparation of the first ever OS map of Ireland. Undoubtedly this will aid progress in improving many aspects of Irish rural life – but at what cost?

Translations is a play about language and the way in which it’s used. It is full of humour, passion, Irish music and song.
