Be my Baby (April, 2017)
Be My Baby by Amanda Whittington Directed by Tricia Peroni ADC Theatre 25 – 29 April 2017
It’s 1964 and for British teenagers the world seems open to new opportunities, sexual liberation and new-found freedoms.
But is it?
What happens to young women who find themselves pregnant and stigmatised by society, turned away from all they know?
Be My Baby explores the lives of four young women as they face the reality of unmarried pregnancy, with the loss of jobs, schooling, boyfriends and sometimes family.
Sent away to give birth in secrecy and shame, to have their babies taken away for adoption, these girls begin a journey of heartache and loss. Barely understanding the choices made for them, they find comfort and friendship in each other, and in the music that seduces them with words of love and romance.
Based on first-person accounts, Be My Baby is sad, funny and immensely moving; a play with music at its heart.
